the most serene republic - "population"
I wanted to use my first blog post to leave a little note about The Most Serene Republic and their new album called Population. I met the band when they were working on their first album and still calling themselves The Onironauts. I remember suggesting they change the name before releasing the CD because I kept forgetting how to pronounce it. They asked me to be their live sound engineer and we spent most of 2005 living together on the road. We toured all over North America opening for artists like Broken Social Scene, Metric, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Stars, and Feist. We traveled to the BC mountains, LA, NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, Kentucky, San Francisco... it was pretty wild and my life certainly wouldn't feel the same without all these experiences we had together. The band's EPK has some footage from these tours... even a really quick shot of me at 2:05.

I first heard the Population demos in late 2006. The album was written pretty much in order except for the last two songs which came together midway through side B. I went out to Ryan's place to help record the demos and to talk about Population. He told me to pick up a copy of Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" novel and a few classical pieces that inspired his work... all wild stuff. When the demos wrapped up, we decided to rework most of the album at Sleepytown.
Mike, Ryan and I spent a couple months working on this beautiful piece of art - recording, mixing, mastering, remixing, re-recording, remastering... it went on forever. Every little hiss and blip was placed where it was for a reason - Not one millisecond of audio unaccounted for. We ended up taking a trip to Lacquer Channel to have Noah Mintz master the album with a fresh pair of ears.
Population was reviewed by just about every major music publication in the english speaking world and appeared on several Best Of The Year lists. Here some some blog links:

Just this week I met up with the band again to do live sound at their recent Toronto gig at the Mod Club. The band really had their shit together and the show went off without a hitch. Here's a link to Why So Looking Back that someone caught on a pretty decent video camera.

Anyway, check out Population if you haven't. It's a beautiful piece that should be heard from start to finish as one complete statement. I feel honoured to have been a part of it and I'm sure everyone else involved in the project feels the same way. It sounds especially pretty on vinyl if you can find a copy.
UPDATE: Best of SXSW according to Crave.
